There’s a photo on my hard drive from 2014 that I cannot replicate. It was shot on a disposable camera at a show my band played in a bar that smelled like old carpet and ambition. The colors are warm and slightly wrong. The shadows have this green-brown thing happening. The highlights just kind of… stop, instead of blowing out. I’ve spent probably six hours across multiple editing sessions trying to get a digital photo to look like that. I’ve gotten close. Never exact.

That gap, the one between digital capture and film’s particular way of seeing the world, is exactly what film emulation is trying to close. And understanding why it exists in the first place is what separates people who use film emulation well from people who just slam a VSCO preset on everything and call it moody.

What Digital Sensors Actually Get Wrong

Modern camera sensors are, technically speaking, more accurate than film. They capture a broader dynamic range, resolve more detail, and respond to light in a clean, linear way. That linearity is the problem.

Film doesn’t respond to light linearly. As highlights increase, film compresses them gradually, rolling them off instead of clipping hard. Shadows retain a slight density even at their darkest, which is why black on film rarely looks like pure black in print. And different film stocks handle color channels independently, which is why Kodak Portra has that warm, slightly desaturated skin tone behavior, while Fuji Velvia punches reds and greens into something almost hyperreal. Digital sensors capture everything with equal, clinical precision, which sounds great until your photo looks like a spreadsheet.

Film emulation in Lightroom is an attempt to bake those stock-specific quirks into your edit. When it’s done right, it’s not a filter. It’s a translation.

The Four Levers That Actually Create Film Character

When I build a film-emulation preset, I’m working with four specific tools in Lightroom, usually in this order.

First, the tone curve. This is the most important one. A film-style S-curve lifts the blacks slightly, around 15-25 points on the bottom-left anchor, and softens the highlight rolloff by pulling the top-right anchor down just a few points. That lifted black point alone will immediately knock the sterile look out of a digital file.

Second, the HSL panel. Film stocks have color bias baked in. For a Portra-style edit, I pull the orange luminance up slightly and reduce orange saturation by about 10-15 points. That mimics the way Portra handles skin. For something more like Ektachrome, I push blue saturation up by 8-10 points and slightly shift the hue toward cyan.

Third, color grading. In the Color Grading panel, I add a subtle warm split to the shadows, something in the yellow-orange range at low saturation, maybe 10-20 on the saturation slider with a luminance adjustment near zero. Highlights get a very slight cool shift. This is where most presets get heavy-handed. Subtlety is the job.

Fourth, grain. Lightroom’s grain tool has three sliders: Amount, Size, and Roughness. For 35mm emulation, I typically land around Amount 20-30, Size 25-35, Roughness 50. Go higher on roughness for pushed film looks. Lower everything for medium format. A lot of people add too much grain because it’s immediately visible, but real film grain at web resolution is quieter than you think.

The Preset Pack That Taught Me to Stop Hoarding

A few years ago, I spent a full weekend building a preset pack I called “Side B,” named after a Wilco song I had on repeat the whole time. Twenty presets, each named after a track from a different record. I almost sold them. At the last minute, I decided to put them up for free instead, figuring maybe a few hundred people would grab them. They got 50,000 downloads in three months.

The feedback I got changed how I think about film emulation entirely. People weren’t using the presets as finishing looks. They were using them as starting points, pulling the curve behavior from one preset, the color grading from another, the grain from a third. They were treating film emulation like a modular system, which is exactly right. No single preset will ever match every photo because no single film stock was shot in every lighting condition. The most useful thing I could have done was give people a toolkit, not a solution.

Why Camera Profiles Matter Before You Touch a Slider

One thing most tutorials skip is the camera profile, the dropdown at the top of the Basic panel. Before you do anything else, set this to “Camera Standard” or “Adobe Neutral.” The default “Adobe Color” profile adds contrast and saturation at the raw processing level, before your sliders even touch the image. If you’re building a film look on top of that, you’re working against yourself from the start.

VSCO’s paid preset packs include their own camera profiles for this reason. The $119 VSCO Film pack isn’t overpriced because of the presets. It’s priced for the profiles. They’ve done the work of calibrating the raw conversion for specific camera models, and that’s where the accuracy lives.

If you’re using free LUTs or presets without companion profiles, start from Adobe Neutral and compensate by pulling your contrast and vibrance back in the Basic panel before you apply anything.

The One Thing That Will Actually Make This Click

Film emulation isn’t about nostalgia or making your photos look old. It’s about using the characteristics of a physical medium to solve a problem that digital capture creates by design. Lifted shadows, compressed highlights, and color channel bias aren’t imperfections in film. They’re decisions you can now make intentionally, with sliders, in about four minutes.

Get the tone curve right first. Everything else is seasoning.
