I named my first preset pack after a Wilco album. Not because it was clever branding, but because I made the whole thing in one weekend while “Yankee Hotel Foxtrot” played on repeat, and by Sunday night I couldn’t separate the two things in my memory. That pack got 50,000 downloads after I posted it for free in a Facebook group, which taught me two things: people are hungry for good presets, and almost nobody actually knows how to use them.

The downloads were flattering. The support emails were humbling. Half the people who grabbed that pack wrote back saying the presets looked nothing like the preview images. They weren’t doing anything wrong, exactly. They just didn’t understand what a preset is actually doing to their file.

A Preset Is a Recipe, Not a Filter

Here’s the mental model that changes everything. A Lightroom preset is a saved set of slider positions, nothing more. When you click apply, Lightroom is not processing your image with some baked-in look the way Instagram does. It’s moving your Exposure, Highlights, Shadows, HSL sliders, Tone Curve points, and Color Grading wheels to wherever the preset creator had them when they hit “save.” That’s it.

This matters enormously because your image and the creator’s image almost certainly started in different places. If the preset drops Exposure by 0.7 stops and your shot is already underexposed by a stop, you’re going to get mud. If it pulls Highlights to -80 and you shot in flat midday sun with no highlight clipping, you’re just losing contrast for no reason.

The preset is doing exactly what it’s supposed to do. You’re just applying it to a file that starts at a different baseline.

The Calibration Step Nobody Skips Twice

Before you apply any preset, take 45 seconds to normalize your exposure. Get your histogram sitting roughly in the center with no serious clipping on either end. Think of it as zeroing out a scale before you weigh something. You don’t need to fully edit the shot. Just get it to a neutral starting point: Exposure somewhere around 0, White Balance set to something reasonable, no extreme shadows or highlights being crushed.

After applying the preset, check four things in order: Exposure first, then White Balance, then the Tone Curve, then the HSL panel. Most good presets nail the color grade but assume a specific exposure range and a specific white balance temperature, usually somewhere between 5000K and 6500K for daylight work. If you shot under tungsten at 3200K and you haven’t corrected it, the preset’s color grade is going to fight your file’s color cast the whole way.

That four-step check takes under two minutes per image. Doing it consistently means your presets start working for you instead of against you.

What the XMP File Actually Contains

When you export or share a preset, Lightroom saves it as an .XMP file. Open one in a text editor sometime. It reads like a list of labeled values: crs:Exposure2012="0.00", crs:Contrast2012="15", crs:Highlights="-40", and so on through every panel in the Develop module. There are no pixels in there. No actual image data. Just instructions.

This is why presets are so small, usually between 5KB and 20KB, and why they transfer between computers instantly. It’s also why the same preset looks wildly different on a Sony a7 file versus a Canon R5 file versus an iPhone RAW. Different sensors render color differently. Different color profiles interpret those XMP values differently. A preset built and previewed on Fujifilm files, with that film simulation baked into the starting color profile, will shift noticeably when you drop it onto a Nikon NEF. Neither result is wrong. They’re just different starting points interpreting the same instructions.

The Case for Making Your Own, Even Badly

I started editing photos because my band couldn’t afford to hire someone for press shots. I was genuinely terrible at it. My first “preset” was just me saving a look I’d accidentally created while trying to fix a blown-out background, and it looked like someone had smeared Vaseline on a sunset. But saving it forced me to look at what the sliders were actually doing, and that process taught me more than any tutorial I read that year.

Making your own presets, even rough ones, does something that downloading someone else’s pack doesn’t. It makes you read the values. You start noticing that your “moody” look is really just Highlights at -65, Shadows at +20, and a slight blue-green push in the Color Grading shadows wheel. Once you can name the moves, you can control them. You stop chasing a vibe and start building one intentionally.

Start with a look you like on one of your own photos. Save it. Apply it to five completely different images and see where it breaks. Fix those three or four values. Save again. You’ll have something usable inside an afternoon.

When to Pay for Presets (and When Not To)

Good commercial preset packs are worth the money when they come with documentation. I mean real documentation: what camera profiles they were built for, what exposure range they assume, what color temperature they target. Preset packs in the $20 to $45 range from working photographers who show their workflow usually deliver this. Packs that sell primarily on aesthetic mood boards and don’t mention color profiles at all are usually built for social media JPEGs and will look wrong on your RAW files.

Free presets from reputable sources, this site included, are often genuinely excellent starting points. The price doesn’t determine quality. The transparency of the creator does.

The most important thing you can do with any preset, paid or free, named after a Wilco album or otherwise, is understand what it’s changing before you decide whether you like the result. A preset you understand is a tool. A preset you don’t is just a button you’re hoping works out.
