I spent three hours last Tuesday staring at a batch of portraits that were technically perfect and somehow completely lifeless. Sharp, well-exposed, neutral white balance. The histogram looked like a textbook example. And yet every single image had that unmistakable quality I’ve come to think of as “digital flatness” — the kind of sterile, clinical look that makes a photo feel like a document instead of a moment. I ended up running them through a Kodak Portra 400 emulation preset I built last year (named “Desolation Row,” for the record), and within about forty seconds, the whole session clicked into place.
That gap between technically correct and visually compelling is exactly what film emulation is designed to close.
What Digital Sensors Actually Get Wrong
Modern camera sensors are extraordinarily accurate. That’s the problem. Film was never accurate — it was interpretive. Different emulsions responded to light in ways that were chemically unpredictable, which created characteristics that our eyes have come to associate with depth, warmth, and mood.
Digital sensors capture linear light data almost perfectly, which means the raw file you’re starting with is essentially a flat, neutral record of what was there. Your camera’s JPEG processing adds contrast and color, but it’s doing so with generic manufacturer algorithms that don’t know anything about your subject, your light source, or the feeling you’re going for.
Film emulsion, on the other hand, had a characteristic curve — a non-linear relationship between the light that hit it and the density recorded on the negative. Shadows would compress and take on a slight color cast. Highlights would roll off gently instead of clipping hard. Grain would appear in a way that was organic and size-variant, not uniform digital noise. These weren’t flaws. They were the medium doing its job.
The Three Technical Pillars of a Convincing Film Look
When I build a film emulation preset from scratch, I focus on three things: tone curve behavior, color channel calibration, and grain structure. Get these right and you’re 80% of the way there.
The tone curve is the most important. In Lightroom’s Point Curve panel, a true film curve has a lifted black point (start by dragging the bottom-left anchor point up to around 15-25 on the output axis), a slightly compressed shadow range, and a highlight rolloff that eases out before it clips. This single adjustment is responsible for that faded, slightly milky look you associate with film — especially slide film like Fuji Velvia or print film like Portra.
Color channel calibration is where most preset builders leave money on the table. Under Camera Calibration (or Color Grading in newer versions of Lightroom), you can push individual color channels in ways that affect how specific tones sit. Portra 400 has warm shadows with a slight green undertone in the mids. Kodak Gold skews yellow in the highlights. Ilford HP5 in black and white has cooler shadows than most digital monochrome conversions default to. These are subtle moves, usually within plus or minus 10 on the hue sliders, but they’re the difference between a preset that looks “inspired by film” and one that actually fools people.
Grain is the most misused tool in Lightroom. The grain panel has three sliders: Amount, Size, and Roughness. For a 35mm look on a 24-megapixel file, I typically use Amount between 25 and 40, Size around 35-45, and Roughness at 60 or above. The Roughness slider controls how irregular the grain clumps are. Keep it low and you get that fake, uniform speckle pattern. Push it up and it starts behaving like actual silver halide crystals.
VSCO, RNI, and Building Your Own: A Realistic Comparison
You have three real options for film emulation in Lightroom: VSCO Film, RNI Films, or building your own presets from scratch.
VSCO Film packs run around $20-$40 per pack and cover classic stocks like Agfa, Kodak, and Fuji. They’re solid, well-researched, and genuinely useful as a starting point. RNI (Really Nice Images) costs about $99 for their full collection and goes deeper on edge cases like expired film and push processing simulations. Both are worth considering if you’re billing clients and need consistency fast.
Building your own takes longer upfront — my Portra 400 preset took a full afternoon to develop — but it gives you something those packs can’t: a look that’s entirely yours. I learned this the hard way in 2019 when I released a free preset pack that ended up getting downloaded over 50,000 times. People loved it, which was great, but it also meant I started seeing my own editing style reflected back at me from photographers I’d never met. There’s something strange about that. My personal work now lives in a set of hand-built presets that I’ve never released, and that separation matters to me.
Matching the Emulation to Your Light Source
This is the step most tutorials skip, and it’s the reason a lot of film emulation presets look wrong on certain images. Film stocks respond differently to different light. Daylight-balanced film like Ektar 100 shot in tungsten light goes very warm and orange. Indoor digital shots with mixed lighting need a different starting point than golden hour portraits.
Before I apply any film emulation preset, I check two things: the dominant light source in the image, and the color temperature I’ve already dialed in during white balance. If the scene is tungsten-heavy, I’ll back off the warmth in my preset’s HSL panel by pulling the orange hue slightly cooler, around minus 8 to minus 12. If it’s overcast natural light, I let the preset run hotter. Film emulation isn’t a one-click solution that ignores context — it’s a framework you adapt to each situation.
The most important thing to understand about film emulation is that you’re not trying to trick anyone into thinking you shot on film. You’re borrowing the optical intelligence that a century of analog photography worked out the hard way, and using it to make your digital images feel more intentional. The technology changed. The principles didn’t.
