Last spring I agreed to cover a friend’s wedding as a favor. Not as the photographer, just as a backup shooter with a mirrorless camera and a wide-angle lens. Three hours later I had 600 raw files, a headache, and a very clear reminder of why I stopped shooting events.
The editing wasn’t the problem. The volume was. And if you’ve ever come home from a shoot, opened Lightroom, and felt your stomach drop at the number in the bottom corner of your catalog, you know exactly what I mean.
Batch editing is the answer to that feeling. Not a workaround, not a shortcut that sacrifices quality. A real, repeatable system that lets you work at the speed your clients actually expect.
Why Syncing Settings Is Not the Same as Batch Editing
Most people learn “sync settings” and think they’ve unlocked batch editing. They haven’t.
Sync settings copies one image’s adjustments onto a selection of others. That’s useful, but it’s blunt. It ignores the fact that exposure varies shot to shot, that your white balance drifts when light changes, and that the image you used as your “hero” edit might be three stops brighter than the one four frames later.
True batch editing is a layered system. It starts with a base preset that handles your global look, uses Auto Tone as a rough pass, then lets Lightroom’s AI-powered tools do the heavy lifting on individual corrections before you make any manual decisions.
The sequence matters more than any single setting.
The Three-Layer System That Actually Scales
Here’s the workflow I use on every large shoot, including that wedding. It cuts my editing time by roughly 70 percent on consistent shooting conditions.
Layer 1: Apply a base preset to all selected images at import. In Lightroom Classic, you can do this in the Import dialog under “Apply During Import” on the right panel. I use a preset I built called “Harvest” (named after the Neil Young album) that pulls down highlights by 30, pushes shadows up by 15, adds a slight warm tint around 5200K, and applies a gentle S-curve for contrast. It does not touch exposure, because exposure is a layer-two problem.
Layer 2: Select all images in the Library module and run Auto Tone. Go to Photo > Auto Tone, or hit Shift+A. On a 600-image cull, this takes about 12 seconds. Lightroom’s scene-adaptive algorithm analyzes each image individually and corrects exposure, contrast, highlights, and shadows based on the actual content. It’s not perfect, but it gets 80 percent of your images to 80 percent of where they need to be, which is the entire goal of this layer.
Layer 3: Sync your lens corrections, sharpening, and noise reduction. These are the settings that should be identical across every image from the same camera-and-lens pairing. In Develop, make your corrections on one image, then select all and hit Sync. In the Sync dialog, check lens corrections, chromatic aberration, sharpening amount (I use 40 with a 1.0 radius and 10 masking for most primes), and luminance noise reduction. Uncheck everything else.
After these three layers, I do a fast pass through the filmstrip flagging anything that still needs individual attention. On a 600-image edit, that’s usually 30 to 50 images. That’s what I actually edit by hand.
When “Consistent” Light Isn’t Consistent at All
Batch editing breaks down fast when your lighting conditions change mid-shoot. A wedding ceremony might go from shaded outdoor at f/2.8, ISO 400 to a dark reception hall at f/2.8, ISO 6400. Running the same Auto Tone pass across both environments produces inconsistent results that look worse than starting from scratch.
The fix is to use Color Labels to separate your shoot into lighting conditions before you do anything else. I use red for outdoor daylight, yellow for mixed indoor-outdoor, and blue for indoor artificial. That takes about five minutes of fast sorting in the Library Grid view. Then I run my three-layer system on each color group separately, adjusting my base preset slightly for each environment. For dark indoor shots I’ll push shadow recovery on my preset from 15 to 35 and add 10 to 15 points of luminance noise reduction before the batch even starts.
This adds maybe 15 minutes to a 600-image project and eliminates about two hours of individual corrections.
The Preset You Build Once and Use for Years
After I learned Lightroom to edit my band’s press shots (nobody in the group had money to hire someone, and I was the only one who’d sit still long enough to figure out the software), I got obsessed with building presets that could travel across different shooting scenarios without falling apart.
A good batch-editing preset handles three things and three things only: color temperature direction, tonal curve shape, and grain or texture if your style calls for it. It does not handle exposure. It does not handle white balance with a specific Kelvin value locked in. Any preset that tries to set a hard exposure value will fail on 40 percent of your images and create more work than it saves.
Keep your presets wide-angle, not telephoto. They should point in a direction, not dictate an outcome.
The Number Most Editors Ignore
In Lightroom Classic, you can check your sync and batch performance by watching the activity indicator in the top-left of the Identity Plate area. Most editors never look at it. They apply a sync to 400 images and immediately start clicking through them before the sync has finished processing, then wonder why their edits look inconsistent.
Let Lightroom finish. A full settings sync on 500 raw files from a modern mirrorless camera can take 45 to 90 seconds depending on your catalog drive speed. If you’re on an external spinning hard drive, move your catalog to your internal SSD. That single change can cut your sync time by more than half.
The whole point of batch editing is to make more decisions faster. If your most important decision is which 50 images still need hand-editing, that judgment has to be based on finished previews, not half-rendered ones.
The most expensive mistake in batch editing isn’t a bad preset. It’s interrupting the process before it’s done.
